Well, football fans, as we close in on the first ever college football playoff, the games are really getting crazy. First of all, Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon ran for an astonishing 408 yards, breaking LaDanian Tomlinson’s FBS record. Even crazier? His last rushing attempt was at the end of the third quarter. And the weekend was even more bonkers than that…
First of all, unranked Northwestern beat freefalling no. 18 Notre Dame, 42-40 in overtime. Continuing to trend in the opposite direction of Notre Dame, no. 4 TCU survived Kansas, 34-30. Ninth-ranked Auburn, another struggling team, got hammered 34-7 by no. 15 Georgia. The Bulldogs had a tough break during their win, however, with running back Todd Gurley suffering a season-ending ACL tear.
Florida State cut it close again, trailing most of the game to unranked Miami. They came back in the second half to win 30-27, but Seminoles fans must be a little worried about their squad.
There was another upset near the top of the standings, as no. 6 Arizona State lost 35-27 to Oregon State, who sealed it with a late pick-six. And Marshall, suddenly unranked but still undefeated, won 41-14 against Rice. Ohio State continued its push toward the top five with a 31-24 win over no. 25 Minnesota.
With the playoffs almost upon us, fans are waiting with bated breath for each week’s new standings. Who will be at the top this week? Will TCU finally supplant one of the top four?
